Merchant Navy is different from the navy in the sense that it offers commercial services, as opposed to the navy, which is largely involved in the defence of a nation.
Merchant Navy is the backbone of international trade, carrying cargo all over the world. The merchant ships employ a huge number of workers to carry and deliver goods from one country to another. Without the merchant navy, much of the import-export business would come to a grinding halt!
A career in the merchant navy is considered a glamorous job, especially by the people who have been bitten by the travel bug. It offers an opportunity to visit new and exotic places all around the globe. Merchant Navy career is not only monetarily rewarding but also satisfying and a quite challenging.
Eligibility Criteria
1. The eligibility for joining merchant navy is finishing class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
2. Candidates have to be unmarried Indian citizens (male or female).
3. Normal vision is required but glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed
4. Admission is through an entrance followed by a screening test and a main written examination.
5. After clearing the test, there is an interview and a medical test.
6. You also need to complete a ship-training course prior to the employment. The course is generally short-term where the candidates are taught basic security concerns of voyaging.
There are some private institutes, which offer training for merchant navy as well. These institutes prepare students for jobs such as deck cadets and marine engineering jobs.
How to Join Merchant Navy After 12th?
After class 12, you are eligible to study the following merchant navy courses:

2) B.E. Marine Engineering
3) B.E. Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering
4) B.E. Petroleum Engineering
5) B.E. Mechanical Engineering
6) B.E. Harbour & Ocean Engineering
7) B.E. Civil Engineering
8) B.E. Electrical & Electronics Engineering
9) B.Sc. Marine Catering
10) Electro Technical Officer Course
6 months’ Pre-Sea Course For General Purpose Rating
MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTIONS: English.
COURSE DURATION: 06 Months (Compulsory Residential).
ELIGIBILITY:
1) Male candidates must have passed with aggregate of 40% marks in 10th Standard/SSLC/SSC/Matriculation or equivalent examinations from a recognized Board with Science and Mathematics as subjects and also scored with minimum 40% marks in English subject.
2) If the candidate is not scored 40% of marks in English Subject in 10th Standard/SSLC/SSC/ Matriculation examination. The minimum 40% marks scored in English Subject in 12th Standard or in the Degree/Diploma Courses conducted by the recognized Board or University shall be considered.
AGE:
Candidates must have completed 17 ½ Years and should be below 25 Years of age on the date of commencement of course (No relaxation of age shall be entertained as per Directorate General of Shipping, Mumbai).
COURSE FEES:
The course fees for Pre-Sea Course for General Purpose Rating is Rs. 2,00,000 – 2,50,000 which is to be paid by the candidates in one or instalments as per institute norms.
CHIEF MATES
* After completing 2nd mate Must have completed at least 18 months Sea service on FG Vessel.
* 6 MONTHS NAVIGATIONAL WATCHKEEPING

* MASTER ORAL:- 18 months seatime after completing Chief mates
Information For Deck Officers :
* CATEGORY (1) (a.) Completed atleast 36 months sea service in the deck capacity (including at least 12 months on commercial trading vessels of 500 gross tonnes or more)
* Out of these 36 months, at least six months must have been served as understudy of the officer in charge of a navigational watch on trading ships of 500 gross tonnes or more and must be correctly documented.
* RANK ACCEPTABLE AB/OS/TR.OS/DECK CADET
* 6 Months of Steering Certificate/Steering Book
* CATEGORY (2) (a.)Completed 30 months sea service in the deck capacity (including at least 12 months on commercial trading ships of 500 gross tonnes or more ,
* Out of these 30 months, at least six months must have been served as understudy of the officer in charge of a navigational watch on trading ships of 500 gross tonnes or more and must be correctly documented AND
* Must have completed I.S.F Record Book For Deck Cadets
* Total Duration:-13 months
* Note :-Classes start with Maths and Physics (2 months)
* Main course starts with February
* Total Expenditure:-16 lakhs (approx)

DIRECT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS ON JUST BASIS OF SEATIME:-
* Required 36 months of sailing on main engine and boilers simultaneously as a first assist or junior assist.
* Course start date :- FEBRUARY
* ISF Record book for engineer cadet (duration 6 months)
* Steam boiler need to be fitted with ship
